Population and Settlment Essay !

Amelia Rodriguez 11/8/09 human geography
Population and Settlement.

More than 335 million people live in North America today; they are some of the world’s most affluent and highly mobile populations. Metropolitan clusters dominate North America’s population geography, producing strikingly uneven patterns of settlement across the region. This theme applies to North America because every day we have more and more immigrants migrated to our country and settling here. Mostly all immigrants migrate and settle in North America then they do in other countries. North America’s population has increased greatly since the beginning of European colonization. Before the 1900s high rates of natural increase produced large families. Waves of foreign immigration swelled settlement, a pattern that continues today. After World War 11 birthrates rose once again in the United States.

Rates of natural increase in North America are below 1 percent annually, and the overall population is growing older. North America’s settlement landscape reflects the population movements, moving regional economic fortunes. Settlement landscapes of North American cities boldly display the consequences of urban decentralization. Rural North American landscapes trace their origins to initial European settlement. Today, many rural North American settings face population declines as they adjust to the changing conditions of modern agriculture. United States farm populations fell by more than two-thirds during the last half of the twentieth century.

Work we did in class 9/24/09 Real World

“Immigration and Emigration”
(nytimes.com) http://topics.nytimes.com
Summary: Immigration has been crucial to the United States. The United States has recently experienced another great wave of immigration, since the 1920s. An estimated 11.9 million illegal immigrants have been living here by 2008. Immigration has become the most non-stop issue on the political agenda. If we stop immigrants form migrating to the United States our population of Aides will decrease tremendously.

“World Population still climbing”
(news.bbc.com) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/

Summary: The United Nations Population Fund says the number of people in the world has doubled since 1960. Global Fertility Rate has declined faster than excepted and global life expectancy has grown from 46 years in 1950 to 66 today. In 61 countries containing about 44% of world numbers, couples are having fewer than the two children needed to keep the population stable. In 1969, world population was growing at 2.4% a year. Today the rate is 1.3%. But most of the growth is in south and west Asia and in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Our low Birth Rate is killing us”
(googlenews.com) http://www.dailycommercial.com/voices/story

Summary: At this time Europe cannot remain as we know it today because of low fertility rate. France=1.8, England=1.6, Germany=1.3, Greece=1.3, Italy=1.2, Spain=1.1. The Fertility rate for all 31 countries of Europe stands on average1.3. In the last 30 years the Muslim population has increased from 82,000 to 2.5 million. By 2020 Germany will be a Muslim state.

Work we did in class ! 9/23/09

- Migration Patterns
Never before in human history have so many people been on the move.
Over 190 million people live outside the country of their birth, thus are officially designated as migrants by international agencies. Japan, Germany, France, Canada, the United States, Italy, and the united Kingdom are the seven industrial countries/developed countries. They tend to move to cities.
Persecution, Famine, and environmental destruction cause people to flee to safe havens elsewhere.

Refuges- A person who flees his or her country because of well founded fear. Based on race. Ethnicity, religion.

-Push and Pull Forces-
Push forces, such as civil strife, environmental degradation, or unemployment, drive people from their homelands. Pull forces such as better economic opportunity or health services, attract migrants to certain locations, within or beyond their national boundaries. Connecting the two are th informational networks or families, friends, and sometimes labor contractors, who provide information on the mechanics of migration, transportation details, and housing and job opportunities.

Net Migration Rates
- The amount of immigration and emigration is measured by the net migration rate, statistics that depicts whether more people are entering or leaving a country.
Some of the highest net migration rates are found in countries that depend heavily on migrants for their labor force, such as the United Arab Emigrates, with a net migration rate.

Homework Explaining the Section

Today in class, we went over the Demographic Transition Chart and we took done many noted.

Pagraph for homework- I read that In Europe, North America, and Japan growth declined as countries became increasingly industralized and urbanized. From this historical data, demographers generted the demorgraphic transition model, a four-stage conceptualization that tracks changes in birthrates and death rates through time as a population urbanizes. Death rates fall dramtically in stage 2 while irthrates remain high, producing a rapid rise in RNI. In both historical and modern times, the decrease in deathrates is usually associated withthe devolpment of public health measures and modern medicane. For many professionals, the demographic transition model is a resonable predictor of where and when we can except popualtion growth rates to slow in the devolping world. The demographic transiton concept is a useful tool for organizing information about the vast diffrence in birthrates and death rats found around the world.

Notes on birth rartes and Death rates pg 22 9/22/09

ndustrialize- Your country is starting to produce things

Demographic transition- a four stage conceptualization that tracks changes in birth rates and death rates, through time as a population urbanizes.

Urbanized-more and more people live in cites and leave the country

Old people got sick and baby got sick. They didn’t have much medicine

Predictors- they predict what's going to happen to a country

HomeWork for 9/17/09 Statistical Comparisons

Developed Country Japan in 2009- Total Fertility Rate- 1.2, Crude birth Rate-8, Births-971, Life expectancy at birth-82, Infant Mortality Rate-3, Under 5 Mortality Rate-4, Crude Death Rate-10, Deaths-1,212-Mid-Year Population-127,079~ Growth Rate -0.2
According to the Population Pyramid the population is going to increase while you get older.

Developing country- Brazil in 2009- Total Fertility Rate-2.2, Crude birth Rate-18, Births-3,663, Life expectancy at birth-72, Infant Mortality Rate-23, Under 5 Mortality Rate-27, Crude Death Rate-6, Deaths-1,262. Mid-year Popualtion-198,739~ Growth Rate 1.2
According to the population pyramid the population in both male and female are going to get smaller by age. When your about first born till you reach 45 is a bigger percentage but when you reach about 50 till 95 the percentage is decreasing in very fast. I think its rapid growth.

Today we took a quiz 9/15/09

In class today we took our quiz and wrote down some notes

Notes:earning Objectives

It can help human geographers determine what will happen to a countries population.
Population Pyramids
Elements of the population pyramid
-age-population pyramids visually present the population of a particular country broken down by age
-gender-population pyramids are split. One side presents the number of males in a particular population the other reflects the number of females within the same population

-young and old populations-Percentage of population under 15-global average is 30 percent (Africa) ; high number indicates great potential for future growth; Percentage of population over age 65:identifies need for health care and other social services.

-life expectancy-average number of years a person is excepted to live; affected by many factors.

THE PRO-GLOBALIZATION STANCE

-Advocats agrue globalization is a logical and inevitable expression of contemporary capitalism that will BENEFIT all peoples.
-Economic globalization can work such wonders, they contend, by enchancing competition, allowing the flow of capital to poor areas, and encouraging the spread of beneficail new technologies and ideas.
-Enhancing such geographical specialization, the pro-globalizers argues, creates a more efficant world economy.
-Economice Covergence- meaning that the worlds poorer countries will gradually catch up with the most advanced economies.
